Upstart is hiring a Mechanical Design Engineer to be part of our growing team. We have finalised a material investment into the business and it's time to continue to develop our product for mass-production and start work on the next generation.


This role will report into a Senior Mechanical Engineer and is integral to Upstart’s success; as a small business, we must hire someone with a can-do attitude, attention to detail and a positive attitude.  As a minimum, you will hold a BSc in Mechanical Engineering and will possess demonstrable working experience.


On a day-to-day basis, you will be responsible for:


  • Proposing solutions to address design challenges, including making an assessment of situations or data and requiring the evaluation of multiple factors and tradeoffs  
  • Designing reliable, inexpensive parts and assemblies using 3D CAD tools and top-down design techniques  
  • Working with project management to create and track schedules for mechanical engineering activities  
  • Coordinating with purchasing and vendors to procure prototype parts  
  • Building and test design prototypes  
  • Developing test plans to establish reliability metrics  
  • Documenting all design outputs and test results  


To qualify for an initial interview, you must meet the following criteria:


  • 3+ years of mechanical design engineering experience, with a proven track record of successful problem solving and design  
  • Ability to provide creative, yet pragmatic solutions to complex engineering problems  
  • Expertise in the use of modern design tools including SolidWorks  
  • Experience in the design of sheet-metal components  
  • Working knowledge of fluidics, mechanics, heat transfer and materials  
  • Knowledge of good engineering practices including drafting standards and tolerance analysis methods
