Development Engineer – Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Upstart Power Inc was founded in July 2017 with the purpose of making small scale Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Systems a commercial reality. In 2018 we completed the acquisition of the SOFC business from Ballard Power Systems, introduced our concept system and signed distribution and supplier agreements.  2019 promises to be a very exciting year for us, we have finalized a material investment in the business, our field trials are exceeding our expectations, we are on track to get our systems fully certified and are excited to launch our overseas field trials in the second half of the year.

  • Design and build SOFC stacks
  • Test and evaluation of SOFC stacks and stack subcomponents
  • Work as part of a team to develop SOFC systems



  • Design, development, build and test of SOFC stacks 
  • Specification, test and development of stack components 
  • Implementation of SOFC development projects 
  • Program planning and execution



  • Bachelors degree in Electrochemistry, Materials Science or a related field (required)
  • Advanced degree (preferred) 
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in solid oxide fuel cells 
  • Practical experience in solid oxide fuel cells
  • Knowledge of electrochemical and materials characterization 
  • Demonstrated capability for critical thinking
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work in a multi-functional team environment
